Fundamental Modeling Techniques: Creating an ArchWay

Fundamental modeling techniques are extremely important to get right. With this in mind, the FlippedNormals.com site and Henning Sanden have started a new tutorial series. this series will  look at imparting some fundamental modeling techniques designed to get you going with modeling with thought as to “the proper way”.

In this series of videos, we’re checking out some very basic, yet powerful modeling techniques -Henning Sanden

The first demonstration centers around modeling an archway. Seems simple enough, and for the most part it is. However, something as simple as an archway can represent a lot of the polygon design challenges that you will face from time to time. An embedded arch in a surface actually comes up quite often in hard surface modeling, so it is important to understand the fundamental maddening techniques behind the form.

Henning is showing modeling inside of Autodesk Maya, however and in actuality, you will find that any polygon modeling application will be similar. The focus for this series is centered more in the why rather than the how.

Having said that, FlippedNormals.com’s post has a handy drop-down listing some of the useful key commands if you are following along using Autodesk Maya. Check out the post for Fundamental Modeling Techniques: Modeling an Archway here.
