Nancy Eperjesy shows how to morph 3D shapes to the beat of music, using Mettle’s ShapeShifter Ae and Trapcode SoundKeys.

ShapeShifter Ae takes care of creating 3D objects. You can build out 3D shapes easily, from After Effects shapes and layer masks.

It might seem that complex shapes and animation like this might be a chore to put together,  but it is actually quite simple. ShapeShifter features combined with basic tools in Ae are all you would need. The animation uses a Displacement Map which allows for a completely customizable technique.

This tutorial is actually an extension of “After Effects 3D Shape Morphing Tutorial”

Nancy also shows how to add custom audio sync and modify the displacement map. These small details can really make a difference. Animating the reflection map, and adding an overall X rotation can all tie all the animation together.
