Motion designer and animator Keith Johnson walks though the process for physically rendering a classic neon sign in Side FX Houdini. The tutorial picks up from part one, which covered modeling the neon sign.
lighting setups using Physically Based Rendering in Mantra
Keith covers the lighting set ups for the neon sign scene. The physical render will use Houdini’s Mantra to get a realistic look. Keith also covers some procedural and hand painted texturing techniques, as well as post retouching in Photoshop.
Part one was all about modeling the classic neon sign. Keith had a conversation about the pros and cons of using procedural modeling techniques. This gave some pretty good insights, drawing from his experiences with leaving Softimage and moving to Houdini.
Keith shares the a download the Houdini file, you can check this post on the sidefx forums.
