a cool and easy way to do a text reveal without track mattes, masks or even pre comps

Typically you can just lay down a mask or use a track matte of some kind to build the type reveal. Mikey Borup has distilled the type reveal process down to one really simple effect in After Effects.

Using the Linear Wipe transition is really all you need on a type layer to animate a type reveal, as if the type were popping up from a masked line. Animating the type normally with the text animators in Ae along with the Linear Wipe offers a really easy and convenient way to build a type reveal on a single layer, without masking or precomposing.
