Creating Contained Fluids Procedurally With Houdini

Contained fluids are not difficult to produce. They are difficult to manage, however. Here, Gaurav Mathur explores ow to create a great looking FLIP simulation, while keeping efficiency in mind.

efficiently simulating liquids inside moving / rotating container.

Based on the work of Andrew D Lyons, who first presented a solution for creating a large number of moving contained fluids.

Andrew showed off his technique at the San Francisco Houdini User’s Group, back in 2010. You can check out that Contained Fluids presentation here.

The final system really shows off how Houdini’s procedural approach can be used to craft automated solutions rather than using costly dynamics. The system draws on a number of Houdini’s operator contexts to efficiently simulate contained fluids.
