How to Use Point Scale Maps to Create Stepped Landscapes

Small Robot Studio looks at creating stepped landscapes in Houdini using some simple tricks.

We’ve likely all seen that “topological art” in every app, where simple geometry makes huge landscape features. Most famously similar to the imaginings of Lee Griggs. A new tutorial from Small Robot Studio’s (Michael Rew) shows how you can create similar stepped landscapes using Houdini.

Rew’s tutorial takes a lot of cues from Lee Griggs’s old xGen tutorial. Rew’s tutorial covers how to generate some maps to both color and scale cubes assigned to points. Of course, in Houdini, everything is procedural and using pre-made texture maps.
