Check Out This Free ACES PBR Validator for Substance 3D Painter

Ciro Cardoso shares an ACES PBR Validator for 3D Painter that simplifies testing PBR value ranges.

Adobe Substance 3D Painter comes with a PBR Validate filter to check the values of your materials. While that’s handy, it still needs to consider ACES workflow.

If you work in ACEScg, there is a new and free tool for Painter, courtesy of Senior Environment Artist at Axis Studios Ciro Cardoso.

The ACES PBR Validator helps check values under an ACES colorspace and simplifies checking the value ranges for albedo (dark/bright) and metal reflectance in textures.

The ACES PBR Validator offers two modes:

  • Color Mode: Analyzes dark and bright value ranges for albedo and metal reflectance. Safe ranges include:
    • No albedo values below 30 or 50 RGB
    • No albedo values above 240 or 249 RGB
  • Roughness Mode (Optional): Provides a visual aid to identify textures with roughness values too close to perfect mirrors or matte surfaces.
