The Maya File Import Script can create previews for many of Maya’s importable formats, including its own .ma and .mb files.

The Maya Model Import Browser & Icon Tool offers a little suer interface that shows all the files that can be imported into Maya, saving you the hassle of going back and forth from Maya and the finder to look at what you have on disk and what you want to open.
