MattePainting Toolkit Updates With Viewport 2 & V-Ray 3 Support

Glyph’s Plugin for Maya, The MattePainting Toolkit recently has seen a new update that adds support for Maya’s Viewport 2.0, V-Ray 3 and support for other renderers such as Arnold.

The MattePainting Toolkit was developed to help artists build photorealistic 3D environments with minimal rendering overhead, by offering an extensive toolset for working with digital paintings as well as sourced datasets from photographs.

Initially parts of the MattePainting Toolkit were developed out of necessity while working on the establishing shot of Paris in the 1950’s for Benjamin Button. The Shot required Glyph Software to use multiple matte paintings that had to be blended together based on geometry occlusion to prevent projection smearing between buildings.

MattePainting Toolkit

MattePainting Toolkit offers a custom OpenGL shader that allows textures to be displayed in high quality. The shader can display up to 16 texture layers in the viewport, with support for HDR equirectangular images that can be displayed spherically. Texture mattes can be painted directly on to geometry within the viewport, with included support for image sequences, so that film plates can be mapped right to geometry.

The Toolkit also has support for Import Bundler and PLY point cloud data from Agisoft Photoscan, Photosynth, or other Structure From Motion (SFM) software. You can use the point clouds as a guide to quickly reconstruct a physical space. The Toolkit will also automatically position the camera in the scene for projection mapping.

New to MattePainting Toolkit Version 3:

• Support for Viewport 2.0, V-Ray 3.0, and rendering in other third
party renderers such as Arnold.

• Spherical projection mapping and UV mapping in addition to camera mapping.

• The ability to paint mattes on geometry in the viewport and bake
textures down to UVs.

Availability

The MattePainting Toolkit is currently available through the Autodesk Exchange for $59.00 and is available for Windows, Mac OSX, and Linux. To learn more about the MattPainting Toolkit for Maya check Glyph Software here, or its home on the Autodesk Exchange here
