SOuP for Maya adds a pfxToArray node which will allow you to instance custom object to the PaintFX strokes, which is a seriously awesome thing! Also, it looks like there is a new-ish site for keeping up with the development of SOuP for Maya, check it out here.
“We’ve all used Maya PaintFX and enjoyed its extensive abilities to achieve wide range of shapes. Now with the pfxToArray node, you can instance to the paintFX strokes your own custom objects with the help of the arrayToDynArray node, and really start being creative.
The example on the left shows how you can selectively read subsets of points which you can then map with any object inside the instancer node via the arrayToDynArray node, in this case a teapot and light bulbs.
SOuP Development is a web site where artists and programmers can come together to discuss and share ideas. From here, the purpose is to build new tools and develop existing ones in order to “improve” on what is currently available. With this in mind, we invite you to join our community.”
