This is the kind of stuff dreams are made of… Am I right? I am sure we have all thought of working and creating on a “Minority Report” like screen and interface, I know I have.

Craig Barr shows some stuff that the Mudbox team have been messing with over at Autodesk showing a preview of some R&D of multitouch gestures in Mudbox, and here he is seen using Mudbox on a new Wacom Cintiq 24HD Touch Display. Holy Crap.

…In this video you see the interaction between my left hand on-screen, using gestures to manipulate the model, and my right hand using the pen for sculpting and painting. The gestures within the tech-preview build of the multi-touch capable Mudbox, are very fluid, quick and easy to use. I find the use of the display while creating in Mudbox feels very natural. It’s quite nice to tumble, zoom, etc. around with one hand and sculpt and paint with the other…

The Wacom Cintiq 24HD Touch screen has the capability to track up to 10 fingers which really opens up a whole world of possibilities for touch-compatible software. The screen also offers 2048 levels of pressure sensitivity for the pen tip (and eraser) and is also capable of detecting pen tilt.

This reminds me of the Bill Buxton days at Alias exploring ways of merging digital more naturally with user input for specific tasks, such as the “tape Drawing” demo shown years and years ago. In this case, working with Mudbox or a sculpting application should feel like working with clay and I think that with the Cintiq Multi-Touch displays we are one step closer.
