A Message Attribute is a dependency node attribute in Maya that does not transmit data, it only declares relationships between nodes. In this case the message attribute in Maya can be used to enhance the functionality of scripts for rigging in Maya were you are able to pass item, object and node names from one node down to another – essentially eliminating the need to hard-code actual names.
