Eric Mootz takes a look and walks us through the release version of his first plugin for Luxology’s Modo, emReader, which is a procedural way to reading geometry cache files in a variety of formats such as OBJ, RealFlow, and Mootzoid Polygonizer formats from Softimage.

emReader is a procedural item which loads indexed geometry cache files. The geometry cache files are only referenced (instead of imported) and directly passed to the renderer when needed

We have seen a preview of the features of emReader for Modo before, and as previously mentioned this is the first venture for Mootzoid into Modo, and there are plans for more with Eric suggesting an emPolygonizer plugin for Modo would be next up for development.

emReader is a functional way to read and use geometry cache sequences in Modo that are actually referenced in and not imported. emReader is built to directly pass the caches to the renderer when they are needed, making emReader incredibly fast and efficient. emReader is 59.00 Euros or roughly $77.00 and currently for Luxology Modo 601 only for Windows 64 bit platform.

Supported file formats:

  • RealFlow .bin.
  • Wavefront .obj.
  • Softimage’s factory Polygonizer .emp2.
  • Mootzoid .emp2 (compatible with emPolygonizer3).
  • Mootzoid .mzd (compatible with emPolygonizer4 and emTopolizer).

Animatable file index (e.g. to make timewarps or reverse the sequence).

Loads motion vectors (scalable), normal vectors and texture coordinates, if available.

Post-load effects:

  • Fix double edges.
  • Fix non-manifold edges.
  • Close holes.
  • Push.
  • Smooth.
  • Thickness.
  • Triangulation.
  • Quadrangulation.
