In a strange twist fabiantheblind software has build an OBJ exporter for After Effects in a world where it seems that everyone is trying to import 3d data lately, the OBJ Vertex Exporter actually takes After Effects layer positions and exports those out to a 3D OBJ file which can then be used in your favorite 3D application… including After Effects for a complete inception type loop.

Export wavefront OBJ vertex point clouds from After Effects layer positions

In reality, the OBJ Vertex Export was built to work with After Effects plugins such as Plexus and TrapCode Form and although useful, there are some issues with the way that AE reads OBJ files and as noted in the tutorial. Plexus seems to get the import correct, however there is a a short little workaround for using the OBJ exporter with Trapcode Form. Check out the OBJ Vertex Export for After Effects here at AEscripts.
