A look at using a layer in 3D Coat to mask another from Freelance 3D Generalist & indie game developer Javis Jones using this technique as a non-destructive workflow allowing you to reveal or hide sections easily.

Here’s a quick video on how to use a layer to mask another layer, in 3D-Coat. You can use it for all sorts of things, the technique lets you mask areas (by painting in them to reveal or hide the painted area)

Here, Javis shows how to add some bullet holes to parts of a surface, and notes that this technique can also be used to add abrasions, pealing paint, or even cutaways of models where you can use one layer to modify or reveal the inside parts of another.
