Jon Tojek provides a great discussion about lighting for film and studio, and how to recreate the on-set lighting effects when matching CG objects to a plate. Jon provides examples of extracting light from a panoramic HDR.
In this Maya tutorial I will discuss a little bit about movie lighting and how VFX artists are often using HDR textures to imitate on set lighting when matching the look of CG objects to a plate
Light Extraction is the technique that Jon uses to create individual light sources on 2D planes or “card”, built from the original HRD and constrains them to a light allowing you the ability to move the new card light in the Maya scene, as you would a typical light.
This provides the opportunity, not only to tweak the initial lighting setup in 3D, but also recreate new lighting setups from a library of extracted lighting information, rather than creating a complete IBL.
Jon Tojek makes note that if you enjoyed this look at CG lighting, he has some great classes that you can check out at fxphd.
