Autodesk fills out the announcement of the Maya 2014 Extension release with a look at using XGen in a couple of scenarios, one creating hair for a character, and the other, populating a terrain with some snow covered trees.

in this presentation we’re going to be taking a look at XGen – it’s a geometry instancer which allows you to populate the surface of a polygon mesh with an arbitrary number of primitives

XGen will allow you to instance anything in Maya, including Curves, spheres, or custom geometry. Embedded in the XGen toolset are interactive grooming tools which allow you to control the primitives as well as controlling the generator with expressions, attributes, or painted maps.

XGen can be previewed in the Maya viewport with viewport 2, providing some great interactivity with some fairly dense scenes. The Maya 2014 Extension expected to be available on or after September 16th, to learn out more about the Maya 2014 Extension Release Features, check the page here.
