Here is a look at an interesting technique for building a surface that is “infinite”. That is to say, setting up a canvas that can be painted without worrying about the tiling of what you are creating. This is all done by a clever UV mapping trick.

David Maas presents his infinite Canvas workshop, a three part look at creating a Tile-able canvas that you can paint on “infinitely” in Modo. David shows how to set up a tiled surface so that whatever you paint on it will be automatically tiled, as you are creating it. David also continues to cover creating displacements and colour using gradients, and using gradient masks as a mask.

David is showing this down in Modo, but does note that there is nothing that couldn’t be recreated in other 3D software packages easily.
