Creating a Facial Rig in Modo 801 Using the Dorito Approach

Technical artist Sergio Mucino shares a look at creating a facial rig in Modo 801 using the “dorito” approach, transferring the famous SoftImage technique to build a similar setup using Modo’s tools.

The Dorito technique involves the ability to have morph maps and facial controls in a single rig, and have the deformed controls sit on top of the initial deformations. This allows for the rig’s controls to move with the deformations, making animating with the rig much more intuitive.

One of the key components to creating this rigging setup in SoftImage was the StaticKineState property which is kind of similar to the Setup layer in Modo 801. The problem with using the Setup Layers in Modo, is that it is not exposed as channels in the user interface, so there is no way to drive them.

Sergio looks at how to use the same approach as seen in the SoftImage dorito techniques in Modo 801 so the end results will be the same.

seriously, give credit where credit is due. This was not invented with Soft.
