VFX Artist Julius Horsthuis Reveals the Process Behind his Amazing Fractal Work

Visual Effects Artist, Julius Horsthuis creates some amazingly complex 3D fractal animations and still renderings. If you are not familiar with his work, just check out some of his Fractal Short Films.

Julius Horsthuis explains the process behind this fractal underwater still.

Julius has posted some insights into his process behind creating the fantastical works we are so used to seeing from him. About a year ago, Julius showed us how to use Mandelbulb 3D within a visual effects pipeline.

Mandelbulb 3D is freely available fractal generating software that was originally based on Daniel White and Paul Nylander’s Mandelbulb work.

Mandelbulb 3D uses a more than a few nonlinear equations to create a wide range of 3D objects. The application even includes rendering with such familiar elements such as lighting, color, specularity, shadows, and depth-of-field.

Here, Julius Horsthuis explains the process behind one of his works, the underwater still. The recorded video is sped up 4 times.
