Rigging 2D Cut-Out Characters With Blender

Karan Shah is a 3D Artist and Animator who has been posting some great Blender related content the last little while, dealing with using Blender for Motion Graphics. His latest tutorial describes how you can rig a 2D cut-out character with blender using Blender Bones or armature.

The process is similar to creating 2D cut-out characters in any 3D program really. You create a series of 2D planes that will hold the illustrated content, and add division in areas where it will deform. Then it is a matter of creating the joints, bones or armature, then skinning and setting weights or adding specialized deformers to the elements.

In later tutorials, Karan will show how you can use Blender’s UV Warp modifiers to assist with deformations, so stay tuned for that. In the meantime, check out another one of Karan’s other Blender motion graphics tutorials, where ehe shows how you can create motion graphic elements with Blender without using any fancy add ons, or even shapeKeys.
