With the release of Cinema 4D R18, Maxon added a new Honeycomb Array. The new Mograph cloner enhancement allows you to easily create hexagonal grids, adding the flexibility to conform them to the shape of an object or a spline.
Adam Hislop, creator of some really great C4D tools, needed the honeycomb functionality ages ago. So he just wrote himself one. Recently however, he has posted the python tool for free to download. The Offset Grid Generator works similar to R18’s Honeycomb Array. Adam notes that it is a great tool for making dynamic maps to clone onto in Mograph.
