Reda Borchardt walks through a simple technique that will build a tightly wrapped bundle of wires in Houdini. The kind of wires that you would find tightly wound around the inside of an electric motor.

a quick and easy way to create an electric motor copper coil or any other bundle of wires

The process is rather simple. It uses a few nodes, such as scatter, copy, sweep, and skin. You can use a curve as a base to wrap the wires around.

This effect could probably be done a variety of ways. Perhaps using something similar to the Cinema 4D Spline Wrap deformer. Houdini dos have the Wire Deformer, but it can be tedious to set up for an effect like this.

A while back, Entagma’s Manuel Cassola Merkle took us through the recreating cinema 4D’s Spline Wrap Deformer — attempting to make it more artist friendly.
