Rigging a Foot Roll With Rubberhose in After Effects

A foot roll is something that bears a lot of importance in character animation. Being able to go from heal to to, and roll of the ball of the foot are things needed for any locomotion. Here, James Hazael shows how you can create one with the Rubberhose extension in Ae.

There is little doubt that a tool like Battle Axe’s Rubberhose is indispensable if you are doing character animation in After Effects. It takes the technical side out of rigging, and makes it easy to animate limbs. Rubber hose is pretty flexible too (unintended pun). You can use it to rig your own setups in After Effects.

James Hazael walks though such a set up. It uses the same principle that is in a lot of standard animation rigs. This means that you can use this technique in After Effects with DUIL or any other IK plugin (not that there are any others for Ae).

James includes the project file available for download, for all you tinkerers out there.
