VFX Artist Andreas Glad posts a look into creating a Maya-style separation command within Houdini. The video demonstration comes as an answer to the question “How do you go about separating a Zbrush object into its parts?”.
Andreas shows how you can split an object up into individual nodes to replicate Maya hierarchy. Andreas notes that typically grouping objets in Houdini is enough. Still, if yu find yourself in need of a Maya-style separation operation, and you need it often, then you can create a digital asset of the connections and partition node.
If you want to have a look at creating a digital asset, Digital Artist Simon Fiedler walks through the process. Simon shows us how to create and prepare a digital asset in Houdini, that can be used in Cinema 4D.
