Great strides have been made in file I/O in the 3D world. With open source projects like Universal Scene Description, Alembic and OpenVDB there are more choices for export and import in a pipeline or workflow. What’s quicker than import export? Copy and Paste. Wouldn’t it be great to simple command/control C and command/control V from one DCC to another? Why not! A new open source initiative by Oliver Hotz hopes to have users everywhere save time on moving stuff from one application to another.

OD_CopyPasteExternal offers free scripts for Modo, Lightwave, Maya, Blender, Houdini, Rhino, 3ds Max and SketchUp, with more applications on the way including Cinema 4D SoftImage, Unity and Unreal.

The script supports a bit more than just geometry, keeping weight and morphs and UV’s that come across as well. There are some things that wont come across, but really, it is meant as a quick-use tool. If you want a more robust transport of a scene, you can use regular I/O channels like Alembic, etc. Check Out Copy Paste External here.
