Maya has some excellent internal tools for creating hair and fur, most recently Xgen offers interactive grooming and instancing that makes it ideal for creating hair, fur, feathers and more. Peregrine Labs Yeti provides a node-based toolset for instancing geometry and takes on a slightly different workflow.
Yeti has excellent integration with Maya and embraces a procedural workflow Users have the flexibility to create, change, animate and render using a customized procedural graph. Yeti grooming workflow doesn’t depend on surface topology or texture UVs. That allows for models to change without drastically affecting the grooms.
