Working With DepthMerge in Fusion, Resolve

Vito LaManna Covers Working With DepthMerge for Easy Occlusions in Fusion or Resolve.

With higher-end compositors, working with depth goes beyond tinkering with simple depth maps. When working with Deep images, a single pixel in a 2D image contains multiple samples at varying depths, which makes it easy to occlude some aspects in the shot when needed. With Fusion and by extension Davinci Resolve, such occlusions are possible by using a feature in the Merge Node, DepthMerge.

It’s not the same as working with Deep Images, but if you wanted to have an object go behind another, it is a much simpler system than masking multiple elements and setting keys for those masks. Con-Fusion’s Vito LaManna walks through the process using an orbiting satellite as the example. Vito nodes that DepthMeerge is sometimes mistaken as Deep Compositing, as popularized by Nuke. It’s not that, but it is beneficial in a lot of cases.
