How to Make a Car in Maya Using NURBS

Alex Cheparev shows how to model a Messerschmitt KR200 car using the lost art of NURBS in Maya.

Cars offer some challenges to 3D Modelers. Smooth curves flowing into harder edges, round corners, and other features make for a lot of hurdles to overcome. The solution isn’t always to use NURBS, but working with curves and surfaces offers up a lot of benefits, especially when modeling things like cars. In this tutorial Modeler, Alex Cheparev shows how to work with NURBS curves and surfaces to build a unique looking Messerschmitt KR200 car.

NURBS (Non-Uniform Rational B-Splines) is a unique workflow for modelers that sort of rides the line between polygon modeling and solid modeling. “We’ll create body panels from simple curves and NURBS operations,” Cheparev says about the techniques used in the tutorial.
