A little while ago, Animator Chester Sampson had some great insights into improving facial animation. His latest video dives into how you can get better-animated mouths and mouth shapes when animating.

The tips range from the simple, like making the inside of the mouth black by working with silhouettes, to some ways that you can keep your lines clean.
