I think it is pretty annoying that you have to be this careful when grouping animated objects. I am working in Cinema4D for the first time on a current project. Before, I always used Maya. Must say I really like working with C4D, has some great productional advantages over Maya, but some of these basic things don’t feel logical to me.
But this workaround will do the trick for now!
