Advanced Screen Replacement Techniques

By July 22, 2015No Comments

If you do any type of visual effect shots, chances are that screen replacements are something that you do on a regular basis. Creating a screen replacement for a shot can range from super simple, to oh-my-god, how do I tackle this.

This is due to a number of reasons, but really you have no idea what will be shot on the day, and how the shot will track.

Here, BatchFrame’s Jesse Toula has a look at talking such a shot. With a look at a more complex screen replacement, Jesse walks through how to achieve good results with a shot that has focus issues, motion blur, and of course… obstructions of the screen,

Some trackers will handle things like motion blur better than others. Typically a planar tracker such as mocha, or any other, won’t particularly care about motion blur. This is because planar trackers use a texture pattern to track, not the individual pixels themselves.

Still, even with planar tracking, some blur on screen replacement shots can be a challenge. Jesse runs through using the basic After Effects motion tracker combined with some manual motion tracking in the tutorial. This is a good watch, even if you think you have a handle on doing screen replacement.
