Creating a Planetary Atmosphere in Maya Using Volume Primitives & Volumetric Fluid Shaders

By July 16, 2012One Comment

The CGBros with a two part tutorial showing how to create a planet with an atmosphere in Maya. Damien creates this effect first by using Maya’s volume primitive -an oldie, however Damien mentions that it is a great quick, and simple solution for creating this effect. It is simple to get a variety of effects by using a volume fog to control the color and intensity of the atmosphere’s glow pretty easily.

In part two, Damien shows how to replace the Volume fog Shader with Maya’s volumetric fluid shader to make a cloud effect for the planet. The Fluid Shader will allow you more control and a much better simulation for the end result.

Be sure to check out the CGBros Youtube Channel for more great tutorials on Maya and Visual Effects.
