Craig Barr demonstrates how it is possible to create custom vector displacement stamps for hard surface sculpting in Mudbox, by using any polygon modeler. In this case, Craig is using Maya to create some simple polygon shapes that will be used to build some vector displacement maps for Mudbox, showing how the tools in the Autodesk suite are able to work together.

You can create custom stamps for hard surface sculpting in Mudbox using any polygonal modeling package. In this example, I am using Maya

Craig provides a good example of the types of hard surface stamps that you are able to create, showing some definition with small bits of details and overhanging surfaces that would be difficult to create any other way.

This all comes from a presentation that was given at the Autodesk booth during the last Siggraph show, where the broadcast demonstration focused on techniques for achieving smooth hard surface sculpts in Mudbox, but the Creating Hard Surface Stamps in Maya For Use in Mudbox was given only for show attendees, and is posted on the Mudroom.

Check out Craig’s post for Creating Hard-Surface Stamps Outside of Mudbox here, where you will also find the Siggraph 2012 Mudbox demo and notes, as well as 9 hard surface vector displacement stamps that you can download and freely use.
