Jamie Hamel-Smith takes a look at his process for modeling tires and treads, in this case, motorcycle tires in Cinema 4D by means of using deformers to complete the shape in a workflow that will allow for repeating patterns on the tire, but also allow the shape to curve on more than one axis.

One of the more challenging tasks that I face when modeling a motorcycle (something I’ve become quite practiced at) is the creation of the tires

Jamie notes that this is a very common technique for creating a tire with treads, and it is similar in any 3D application, however, Jamie provides a spin in the common approach by using two deformers on opposing axes working in conjunction with each other to provide a curve for the tire’s shape as well as the MoGraph Cloner Object.
