The Object to Average Position tool sounds like a mouthful, but it is actually a very useful tool for your Maya work. The tool comes to use via it’s creator, Charlie Wales (Carlos Rico Adega).
Creates an object at the average position of selected elements (transforms, faces, edges, vertices,CVs).
Object to Average Position presents a slim panel that allows you to create an object at the average position based on your selection. You can choose from a list of objects in the pulldown menu. Choose between a list of primitives, or choose to place a locator object to the average position of your selection.
The cool thing is, that Object to Average Position not only works on the object level in Maya, but also the component level. You can easily create an object of locator based on a selection of faces, edges, vertices, or even CVs.
This means that you can accurately place a locator or object of your choice based on a single object, which can prove enormously useful when modeling or rigging. This is demonstrated in the example video, where charlie shows how to place a locator and a plane on a shape with a couple of clicks.
The tool for Maya is offered courteously as freeware, so be sure to check out Object to Average Position Tool here.
