Modeling a Sonic Screwdriver in Maya

Alex Cheparev walks through creating a Doctor Who Sonic Screwdriver in Autodesk Maya. The screwdriver is a great hard surface modeling challenge with some great interconenctive and interacting forms.

Alex Cheparev has been posting some great modeling reference lately. His tutorials are a balance of voice over, and time-lapse, peppered with some really great tips.

If you watch, you need to watch all the way through as to not miss some great tips. As an example, mid-modeling the sonic screwdriver, Alex shows how to create UV’s on an angled and deformed tube shape, but using Maya’s Unitize UV’s command, and designating a seam by selecting all the edges for a Move and Sew operation, with the seam unselected —Works out brilliantly.
