Remember Entagma’s look at creating dented geometry in Houdini? No worries if you don’t, just check it out first. Essentially, Moritz Schwind showed how you can create dented geometry by using booleans on VDB objects. It was pretty impressive to see the procedural workflow for a denting effect like that. Although Houdini makes effects like this easy, that is not to say that it is the only application that can do it. OpenVDB to the rescue.

After seeing Moritz’s work in Houdini, FX Artist, Ruchit Bhatt set out to recreate the same effect in Maya, this time using the openVDB plugin, which is a SOuP node. Ruchit is able to come up with a similar result, using the same premise as described throughout the Houdini tutorial.
