CG Technical Artist Wijnand Koreman posts a simple but really helpful Maya Python script that will allow you to create holes in Meshes. The Octagonal Hole script will poke an 8 sided hole into an object, from a vertex selection. The script works better on flatter surfaces than curved ones.
Still, it is really handy to be able to create topology efficient holes at the click of a button. You would think that this would be easy to do in Maya on your own, but it’s not really. Instead of messing around with a few modeling operation, the script serves a nice purpose. Check out the page for the Octagonal Hole Script for Maya here.
