Spline Strokes Can Easily Create Loop Selections in 3D-Coat

Spline Strokes in 3D-Coat are typically used for painting. That doesn’t mean that you can’t use them for sculpting too. The sculpting tools are pretty straight forward to use, especially in an app like 3D Coat. What becomes more interesting is how to employ some tools in interesting ways to make sculpting easier.

That is the premise behind this look at sculpting the detailed scales in the forearm of a Crocodile. Freehand sculpting the recesses of the scales would not only be time consuming, but it would be difficult to get it looking right.

There is another way. Using Spline Strokes draw mode in 3DC, you can easily create a mask that you can use to freeze parts of your model, to sculpt the remaining. With every brush in 3DC, comes the opportunity to use them in different modes. Spline Stroke Mode lets you use a brush along the curvature and shape of a spline that you can draw directly on the surface of the model.

Once you draw out the splines, you can then use them to freeze and sculpt on parts of your model easily.
