Type layers, like shape layers in After Effects, are flexible to work with and offer a lot of power to users. This new tutorial from Mobox Graphics‘ Mike Ridolfi shows how to use the two together to create a freat-looking type displacement animation in After Effects.

Ridolfi offers some tips for working with displacements and shape layers together. The tutorial then shows how to make some stylistic choices for the final animation.
