The first time I saw someone use UVs in a modeling workflow, it blew my mind a little. Check out this quick tip tutorial from Rigging Dojo’s Brad Clark, who shows how you can use the UV Editor in Maya to get selections quickly.

You can use the UV editor to make selections on complicated overlapping shapes. That can come in handy for a lot of things, including things like hair or feathers or fur cards, making it easier to edit the weights for your character in rigging tasks.
