A Simple Trick to Join 2D Objects in Blender

Chipp Walters shows a trick that lets you join 2D objects like booleans on 3D ones.

Working with polygons is disparately different than working with a parametric solid modeler. Solids allow you to boolean freely, and as Chipp notes in his latest Blender tip, they also let you operate with 2D shapes as if they were 3D. Most notably, you can use boolean operations on the 2D shapes before you make them 3D. Apps like Moment of Inspiration, Fusion 360, and others like them, start with 2D objects that will become 3D ones.

Join 2D objects Like Booleans.

Polygon modelers can’t modify 2D shapes like they can with 3D ones. In Blender, you can’t perform booleans on 2D shapes. But Chipp Walters shows a trick that lets you join 2D objects as if you did a boolean operation. The method is using a projection and then dissolving the edges that you don’t want to keep. While it’s a multi-step process, it’s quick and effective.
