How to Create a Rain Puddle and Ripple Shader With Arnold

Yohan Dsouza shows how to create ripples and puddles in an Arnold Shader using Maya.

A new tutorial from DSZ arts (Yohan Dsouza) walks through building a rain-effect shader in Maya, using Arnold. The tutorial covers how to make a ripple effect from the raindrops, along with puddles randomly peppered on the ground. The shader is a mix of texture-based assets, as well as some procedural techniques.

Puddles and Ripples.

Dsouza shows how to create a puddle effect using noise nodes. The ripple effect from the raindrops comes from using an animated map (derived from a simple animation in After Effects) to affect the standard surface shader’s coat attribute.
