How to Make a Light Mixer in Blender Compositor

Christoph Werner shows how you can create light layers in Blender similar to light mixers found elsewhere.

Many rendering engines offer a way to mix lighting scenarios after the render is complete. Re-Lighting is also possible with a bit of setup within Blender’s compositor, according to Christoph Werner.

His latest tutorial talks about what he calls “light layers,” where rendering represents a single light object, a light group, or a complete world lighting in Blender. The setup will be very similar to how light mixers work.

The rendered results are used in Blender’s compositor to control the light intensity and color of the final image. The tutorial shows how your lighting adjustments can update in real-time.

“Because every image is already of high quality, there is no need to re-render the whole scene when changing the light intensity.” Werner says, “And the very best: you can do this even for complete frame sets or animate the light values if needed. This can be a real-time saver!”
