This latest tutorial from Uhr (Maximilian Schönherr) shows how easy it is to convert a mesh into a volume using Bifrost in Maya. The Mesh to Volume node lets you plug in any mesh and convert it to a volume.

On the other side of that, you can also reverse the process and create a mesh from a volume.
