Autodesk announced at Siggraph 2011 the new subscription advantage packs for their entertainment creation suites, and new to 3ds MAX 2012 Subscription Advantage Pack is something called State Sets, for creating render passes and performing bidirectional interoperability with Adobe After Effects.
