A look at one of the principles and techniques in Maya rigging called space switching or dynamic parenting with Zeth Willie.

…This video goes over some of the concepts of space switching, what it is, how you might use it, how to set it up, etc…

Zeth notes that Space Switching creates simulated parents in a rig so that you are able to better control the movement of an object in the scene by driving different parts of the rig at different times.

As an example of space switching is a characters hand staying in place, or moving along with the character when moving a characters COG (center of gravity). This would be a classic use of switching the hand controller from world space to chest, head or COG space.
