Overview of Using The Rigging Toolbox for Maya

By September 10, 2012No Comments

Josh Buck give a good overview of his new Rigging Toolbox Python Script for Maya, comprising as a suite of individual tools for task specific work, in addition to, a complete auto-rig process.

Unlike other “auto-riggers”, The Rigging Toolbox allows for the creation of custom controls and includes many control shapes, control shape positioning and naming options, the ability to create rigs with ‘zeroed-out’ controls and the ability to set custom control colors. The result is a simple, fun to use – yet powerful, game friendly custom rig with immediate user familiarity

The Rigging Toolbox for Maya is a bit different from most “auto-Riggers” or auto rigging scripts out there in that it will allow you to create custom controls and likewise includes control shapes for you to select from. You are able to use individual tools or Rigging ToolBox Components to aid in your Maya rigging, or, alternatively, you can use the auto-rig functionality to rig complete characters with features including IK/FK switching and foot roll attributes.

The Rigging ToolBox Features:

  • Joint tools that aid in the building of a clean, game-engine friendly skeleton
  • Save skeletons in a proprietary and portable format
  • Scale skeletons and joint chains without that pesky tranform node
  • Choose from 14 different single-node control curves to use as skeletal controls
  • Quickly align control curves to joints and automatically name them
  • Automatically create “zeroed out” controls
  • A full “biped” auto-rigger with IK/FK switch or blend and foot rool attributes – create a fully functioning rig in minutes!
  • Quickly build ‘control chains’ of any length
  • A “Scene Edit” utility that allows for the editing of everything in a Maya scene based on a list.  Rename a selection of objects numerically in seconds. Color controls and joints.

The Rigging ToolBox is written in Python and for Maya 2011, 2012, 2013 – mac and windows for $45.00, which includes a fully rigged character as well. Find out more about The Rigging ToolBox for Maya here
