Our old friend Stuart Christensen shows an interesting technique for animating text in Maya using a Boolean to cutout the type from another surface. Yes, a Boolean, that felt weird just typing it. Typically Booleans in Maya (or any other polygon modeler) has issues depending on the surfaces used in the Boolean operation, and for the most part, lack dependability and often give you strange results, probably more so in Maya.

Here’s a simple way to establish a cutout text block and by using some simple keyframing you will be on the path to making your animated text effects look super pro

Here Stuart shows a process for creating a simple type animation using the type objects to knock out text form a surface with a boolean operation and creating a parented text element that will be animated. Some simple concepts that are laid out well by Stuart. Be sure to check out Stuart’s Channel where he always has interesting stuff to check out!
